Exploring the Impact of social media on Adolescent Mental Health: A Psychosocial Perspective

Title:
Exploring the Impact of social media on Adolescent
Mental Health: A Psychosocial Perspective

Introduction:

The
advent of social media has been one of the most significant technological
developments of the 21st century, with profound implications for social
interaction and communication. Its ubiquity in the lives of adolescents has
raised important questions about its impact on their mental health. Research
indicates that young people spend a considerable portion of their day engaging
with social media platforms (Twenge & Campbell, 2018). This pervasive
engagement has the potential to affect their psychological well-being, with
studies showing varying effects on self-esteem, anxiety, and depression (Twenge
& Campbell, 2018). The developmental stage of adolescence, marked by
heightened sensitivity to peer approval and identity exploration, suggests that
the influence of social media during this period is particularly significant.
Yet, there is a scarcity of comprehensive research adopting a psychosocial
perspective to understand how these virtual platforms may be intertwined with
adolescent development and mental health. This proposal sets out to address
this gap by exploring both the positive and negative psychosocial impacts of
social media on adolescents.
