Purpose: Turning in the works cited page for Essay #2 this week is mostly so that I can see if you are formatting the page correctly and that you are using appropriate, legitimate sources.
FAQ: What if I change out some of the sources before I’m done with the final draft?
Answer: That’s okay! You will very likely change and add sources. The most important part of this assignment today is for you to include appropriate sources in the correct format.
Instructions: Please upload your works cited page for Essay #2 here. Make sure that you follow all instructions for how to format the page. Follow the example’s format exactly. The videos and instructions in this module help you with the formatting. The MLA format is very specific, and you cannot “wing it” or guess. Even if you get all of your sources from the library database citing function, you may also need to do further editing to get the formatting done correctly. You will need to upload the document as a .pdf or .docx file. If you are using an online word processor, such as Google docs, be sure to download the file first, convert it to a .pdf, then upload it.
Works Cited—8 sources minimum. At least 6 sources must be from the library databases, but you can also use Google Scholar for additional sources, and other legitimate websites for visual sources. There is no maximum number of sources–use as many as you need. Please use mostly scholarly articles from academic journals, and at least one book. For example, use 5 articles and 1 book from the library databases, and two legitimate sources from the Internet. You cannot use more than two sources from the Internet. You must use the library databases for most of your research. In fact, you should do all of your research in the library databases, and you do not have to use any sources from the Internet (but you can use two if you need to). Even if you do not use any sources from the Internet, you must still have 8 sources minimum.
You have already gone into the library databases to find some sources for your First Amendment research topic, but continue your research in the library databases to find sources that will support Essay #2 specifically. These sources will support Essay #2 in the three aspects that you are addressing in this essay:
1) Explanation of the problem–use articles and a book that describe your First Amendment topic current problem (use examples and cases from the past 20 – 25 years, starting from 2000)
2) Current examples–use articles that provide examples of the current problem (use examples and cases from the past 20 – 25 years, starting from 2000)
3) Pros and cons–use articles that discuss the current debates about the problem (use examples and cases from 1940 to NOW).
You will be using primarily secondary sources ABOUT your topic, and not primary sources that were written a long time ago (although you might use some original documents if they are relevant to the current problem–but you don’t have to). You are finished with the historical background. You will not be including it in Essay 2.
Note: Unless your topic is specifically about foreign countries (there is only one topic about this), use examples, situations, and cases from the United States. If you do use an example from a foreign country, use it only to contrast with and highlight the situation in the U.S. This research paper is about the First Amendment in the U.S.
