Essay 2: Movements and Developments that Influenced Americans’ Changing Sense of Themselves and Society
Essay Prompt (Gender and Society)
Examine an artistic, cultural, scientific, or technological development that shaped the way Americans viewed themselves and their society during the nation’s history. How has this development shaped the way Americans view one of the following topics: the role of government, capitalism, socialism, imperialism, globalization, democracy, the workplace, income inequality, LGBTQ rights, race and racism, gender and society, or immigration.
To support your argument, include evidence from one current (published in 2023 or 2024) article from The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Time magazine, The New Yorker, or The Nevada Independent related to your chosen development, as well as evidence from at least three works (authors, artists, films) we have examined in the second half of the semester. How have these works defined and/or critiqued this development over time? Include historical context from the lecture.
Essay Objectives
Essays in CH 203 are designed to assist students in demonstrating fulfillment of the Core Objectives (COs) and Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) indicated in the course syllabus. Essay 2 will center on the following, with emphasis on SLO 4:
Core Objective (CO)
Core Objective 5: History and Culture
Students will be able to describe the processes by which past and present societies have been created and perpetuated through their history, ideas, and cultural products. Students will engage both historical and contemporary cultural texts through critical reading, analysis, and interpretation in the context of culture, society, and individual identity.
Student Learning Objectives (SLOs)
Students successfully completing CH 203 will be able to:
1. Express ideas clearly and persuasively, using relevant evidence to support their arguments. 2. Analyze primary source texts with attention to content, historical and cultural context, and
rhetorical techniques.

5. Connect the beliefs, values, and actions of past generations of Americans to contemporary conditions in the United States.
Essay Instructions and Criteria
Write a 4–5 page, double-spaced paper (1000–1250 words) that adheres to MLA style guidelines and addresses the topic below. Use one current article from a source indicated below and at least three of the assigned readings (or films and artwork examined in lectures) from Weeks 9–16 to support your thesis and arguments.
Your essay must be well structured and contain an introductory paragraph with a clearly stated thesis statement (see “The Introductory Paragraph” for more information on how to write a good introduction). In addition to an introduction and conclusion, your essay must have a minimum of three fully developed paragraphs in the body (with evidence supporting the arguments raised in each paragraph). You must also use at least three different sources from texts assigned to this course (readings from Five Hundred Years, readings from our Supplemental Reading folder, or the films in our syllabus).
