You’ll need to pick, read, and annotate the essay that you are analyzing before you begin your post.

Being as thorough and specific as you can at this early stage in the brainstorming process, start to pick apart the different elements of the article that you’ve chosen:
- What is the writer’s purpose, and who is their audience?
- What is the writer’s main claim, and what reasons do they offer to support that claim?
- How does the writer appeal to logos, ethos, and pathos? Which appeal do you think the writer relies on?
- What evidence do you have to support your observation from Step 3? Where in the text specifically can you point?
- What questions do you still have about the text? What are you still curious or confused about as you get ready for your rough draft?
