Based on your reading of Elijah Anderson’s Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City, write a paper that addresses what the response of the juvenile justice system should be to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency in urban communities.
In doing this you should describe the social and environmental factors that have effected the youths in the book; additionally:
- You should discuss which factors influenced the behaviors of the youths growing up in the inner city of Philadelphia, PA. Be sure to address sociological organization (or lack of) in this section.
- You should discuss how the book challenges the notion that inner-city black America is not the stereotypical place of random violence but is actually regulated through an informal but well organized Code of the Street.
- You should discuss how the book addresses the question of how individuals who live in this environment do not engage in delinquency and the importance of the concept of “code switching”.
In this paper you should be able to apply at least 2 theories of juvenile delinquency that we have discussed in class and can be found in your textbook. Your discussion of the social and environmental factors as well as the theories of delinquency will help you formulate your answer of what can be done to prevent delinquency in this type of environment.
There is no page limit for your paper. The key to a high quality paper is for you to completely discuss the issues facing the youth in this type of urban environment and what can be done from a theoretical and practical level to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency.
Your papers should be in APA 6th edition format. For more information of APA 6th edition go to http://libguides.sullivan.edu/apa. Your grade will be based on the rubric.
