1. For graduate students (HS 5050) the paper is 8-10 pages in length not including the title page, abstract,
and reference page(s). It will be
typewritten and double-spaced, using Times Roman, 12 font, and 1-inch
margins. Any deviation from the format
described above will result in the deduction of points.

(6th Edition) format with
internal
documentation and a “Reference” page listing no less than 08 references.
“Wikepedia” is not an
acceptable source. The Internet may be
used to access information from scholarly journals, libraries, etc. Google
Scholar is an excellent database for research materials.
7. A minimum
of 05 for undergrad and 08 references for graduate
students
are required for this research paper.

less than two books from this course will be used as
references.

minimum of three references from newspapers or consumer
magazines.

minimum of 5 references from academic (peer reviewed)
Journals
or professional journals.
8. Papers will be turned in no later than 27 October 2024 as indicated
on
the attached class schedule. Late papers
will be accepted but 10 points will be deducted for each day late INCLUDING
SATURDAY, SUNDAY, AND HOLIDAYS.
Special Note.

The
completed paper must be submitted through TurnItIn via
Moodle.
The university threshold for similarity, meaning your paper
matches another source almost word for word is a 25% (MAX). Therefore, ensure
you cite your work properly. Papers with a similarity rate higher
than 25% will require an additional review by your instructor. If it is
subsequently determined to be plagiarism, the student will receive a failing
grade and could face an academic discipline board. Additionally, no more than 30%
percent of your paper can be quoted material. Anything higher will
be viewed as someone else’s work.

All sources other than your own ideas
must be cited in the paper
and documented on the reference page.

The
topic of the paper can reflect the student’s interest in a
specific
problem relating to homeland security policy studies. Students will have the flexibility in
pursuing their own interests in choosing a topic.

Topic. Your topic must relate to our
course. I know this is broad, but I have made it this way by design. Pick a
topic that you are interested in. I suggest you come up with a few possible
options and then look at the number of resources you can access. Based on your
findings go with the topic that makes the most sense. There is nothing worse
than writing on a topic that does not interest you.
NOTE: I do not want in an informational –
history paper. Your topic needs to take a position, it must analyze the topic
and provide for potential options in accordance with the position you have
taken. An example topic could be something along these lines “Is the U.S.
Immigration Policy consistent with Social Justice”. You would then present
your position; say you think it is not consistent – then make that argument.
However, you must also provide the opposing view, why would people say it is
consistent with social justice. Close with why your position is the correct
position.
Submitting
a Topic. Please submit your title along with a short
abstract and basic outline. I will approve or give you feedback to adjust. See
the example attached.
Length.
Regarding the length, you must be able to address your topic adequately enough
as to bring your topic full circle. It is very challenging to do so in the
prescribe length. Do not exceed the page limit per the syllabus.
Number of sources. What I have put in this syllabus is
a guide. I will not be counting specific types of sources. Just ensure you have
an appropriate number of sources to ensure balance in your approach. They do
need to be scholarly – reputable.
Citing. Use the Purdue Online Writing Lab
for the format. You can also leverage sites such as
http://www.citationmachine.net/ . Failure to cite works properly is the biggest
issue students have. Well, that and not having someone proofread their paper. You
need to spend time making sure you do it correctly as the repercussions of
failing to do so can be severe.
Similarity
Rate. What this
means is your paper cannot be more than 25% similar to any document in the
Turnitin database. Anything over 25% is then reviewed for plagiarism. In most
cases its not plagiarism, it is a result of not citing the work referenced
correctly.
Quoted material. Your paper cannot have more than 30% quoted
material
