Other professionals view the extreme outcomes of some public health problems to be comparable to those stemming from disasters and warrant the same funding and resources, even when the problem might not typically be classified as an emergency.
The two articles below present arguments from alternate perspectives of the controversy. The authors of the first article, Haffajee et al., (2014), described the debate and explained why they consider declarations should not be used in the case of public health issues. Conversely, the authors of the second article, Sunshine et al., (2019), argued that the definition of a public health emergency should be expanded and some public health issues should receive comparative resources.
