Understanding how to craft a sustainability strategy is crucial for businesses aiming to integrate sustainable practices into their core operations. Reflect on what you have learned about corporate sustainability strategies and consider the following:
Prompt:
Imagine you are the sustainability officer for a mid-sized company in the recreation vehicle (RV) or offroad vehicle (OHV) sector. Your task is to develop the beginning of a sustainability strategy that aligns with the company’s business goals and addresses key environmental and social issues. In a 250-word response, address the following:
- Key Focus Areas: Identify the primary environmental and social issues relevant to an RV company. Why are these issues significant for your company?
- Strategic Goals: Outline at least three strategic sustainability goals that your company should aim to achieve.
- Integration Plan: Describe briefly how you would integrate these sustainability goals into the company’s overall business strategy.
Example Response:
Key Focus Areas:
For an RV company, key sustainability issues include reducing carbon emissions, sustainable material sourcing, and promoting responsible outdoor recreation. Reducing carbon emissions is crucial due to the high fuel consumption of RVs, sustainable material sourcing minimizes environmental impact, and promoting responsible outdoor recreation is vital for community engagement and ethical business practices.
Strategic Goals:
- Carbon Emission Reduction: Achieve a 30% reduction in the carbon emissions of new RV models by 2026 through the use of lightweight materials and more efficient engines.
- Sustainable Materials: Source 100% of the interior materials for RVs from sustainable suppliers by 2025.
- Community Engagement: Implement community outreach programs in 15 key markets by 2024 to promote responsible outdoor recreation and conservation.
Integration Plan:
To integrate these goals, the company will focus on developing RV models with fuel-efficient technologies and lightweight, sustainable materials. Operations will be optimized to reduce waste and energy use, and supply chain management will prioritize suppliers with sustainable practices. Community engagement will involve partnerships with local organizations to support environmental education and conservation initiatives.

Key Focus Area: An RV company should prioritize sustainability through emissions reductions, on-board energy efficiency, and end of life planning. Significant emissions output is present in materials production (Baltic et al., 2022). Motor homes and caravans use key materials of aluminum, fiberglass composite, plastics, and steel (Baltic et al., 2022). With materials foundational to RVs, it is imperative that material sourcing is well researched and materials themselves are thoughtfully chosen to be as sustainable as possible. With many RVs offering comforts such as electricity and appliances such as ovens, sustainability should continue through the manufacturing process into the user experience. Given the depreciating nature of RVs and their limited “shelf-life,” end of life should be implemented into the design process from the start, allowing for longer life cycles and second-life opportunities.
Strategic Goals:
- Emissions Reductions: Reduce emissions in materials manufacturing by 50% by 2030. Achieve this through transitioning to 100% recycled aluminum and steel; seek alternative manufacturing processes for other materials such as fiberglass composite and plastics.
- Energy-Efficiency: By 2026, all RVs should have energy-efficient appliances, solar power, and LED lighting. Achieve this through supplier partnerships and researching innovation.
- End of Life Planning: Ensure that all new RVs produced after 2025 contain components that total a minimum of 30% recyclability (stretch goal: 50%). Achieve this through an LCA of current RV products and adaptability for potential to reduce product range and simplify the design process.
Integration Plan:
- Materials Manufacturing Emissions Reduction: Communicate new goal of using 100% recycled aluminum and steel to current vendors. If unable to accommodate, identify and establish partnerships with new vendors that align with the criteria. Since fiberglass composite lacks recyclability, reduce reliance on the material through design adjustments and shifting to a closed-molding process (a more exact process resulting in less scrap and higher quality) (Baltic et al., 2022). Similar approach for plastics: reduce reliance through design adjustments, re-visit materials suppliers, and source more sustainable plastic materials and manufacturing processes.
- Energy Efficiency: Transition to energy-efficient appliances. Explore appliance diversity reduction: what appliances serve multiple purposes. Use 100% LED lighting. Integrate more powerful solar panels and green battery systems.
- End of Life Planning: Supported by goals 1 and 2, structural materials (e.g., aluminum) and user experience materials (e.g., LED lights) in addition to comfort materials (e.g., textiles) should be intentionally chosen to be both sustainably sourced and modularly designed, making it easier for repairs and end of life component breakdown.

In my role as the sustainability officer for our RV company I will be concentrating on tackling the significant environmental and social challenges specific to our industry such as managing resources efficiently handling waste responsibly and engaging with the local community effectively.
Key Focus Areas:
Manufacturing RVs requires a significant amount of resources and energy in the manufacturing process. Sustainability plays a role in sourcing materials for RVs by opting for lightweight and recyclable components to minimize our impact on the environment. RV production contributes significantly to waste generation so adopting measures to reduce waste and promote recycling will improve our responsibility. Engagement with the community is key for our recreation company as well; we need to focus on building connections, with local residents and stakeholders to ensure our activities positively impact and honor their requirements.
Strategic Goals
1) We will strive to cut down on our carbon footprint by targeting a 25 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions within the five years by adopting more efficient energy manufacturing methods.
2) We will boost recycling rates and strive for a 50 percent rise in material recycling through the execution of a waste management initiative.
3) We will encourage community engagement by collaborating with groups and allocating 1 percent of earnings to aid local conservation initiatives.
Integration Plan
To include these sustainability objectives in our business plan effectively, I will work with departments like production and distribution as well as advertising and promotion areas. I’ll include sustainability measures in our performance reviews and reporting systems to ensure responsibility. Moreover, I will suggest organizing learning sessions for staff to promote a sustainability culture and integrate customer input on friendly tactics in our promotional plans. This comprehensive strategy will harmonize our sustainability aims with our business targets, boosting profits while benefiting the community positively.
