Assessing the published literature is a key skill for anyone who wishes to engage in evidence-based practice. All papers have some limitations and weaknesses that might limit the reliance that you put on the results presented. The ability to recognise these, and the extent to which they may or may not compromise the conclusions that the authors draw, is fundamental to good practice.
Your task is to provide a critique of the paper identified above. Your critique should include a summary of the key elements of the methodology, data analysis and interpretation of results, including any limitations or flaws in the experimental design, data analysis or in the interpretation of the results. A take-home message for athletes should be included. The total length of your submission, including any references that you rely on, should not exceed 1200 words. Any references that you cite should be listed at the end with full bibliographic details. The word count should be shown at the end of your submission.
It is important to bear in mind that a critique, or critical analysis, of a paper is NOT the same as a summary. The critique is concerned more with an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the paper rather than summarising what was done and what was found. The key elements of the methodology and the findings should, of course be discussed, but this should be in the context of the rationale for the study, the appropriateness or otherwise of the study design and data analysis, and the interpretation of the results.
Many websites will provide guidelines on the key elements of a paper critique. There is no single best way to approach this, but there is broad agreement as to what constitutes a good critique.
