- Choose two theories from the course (e.g., Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory, Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, Information-Processing Theory, Ecological Systems Theory, Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory, etc.).
- Describe each theory in detail.
- What are the central claims of the theory?
- How are those claims applied to development?
- What are some strengths and weaknesses of the theory?
- Include three research studies related to each theory from the last 15 years (six total): You can find these research studies by performing a PsycINFO search via the Athabasca University Library.
- Describe each study in detail. Try to focus on one aspect of the theory that all three articles have in common, rather than three disparate aspects.
- Discuss the evidence that each research study provides for and/or against each theory. Alternatively, if the study claims to provide support for or against the theory, but you disagree, explain why.
- Make sure that you compare and contrast the two theories (i.e., integrate the information) and provide a conclusion.
- What are the similarities and differences between the two theories?
- What is your conclusion about the theories and the evidence pertaining to those theories?
- Submit a paper of approximately 10 pages (2,500 words), varying from about 7 pages to about 14 pages (1,750–3,500 words). The number of pages may vary for the sections, depending on the amount of detail involved in each theory and research study. Your paper should include three sections: Theory 1, Theory 2, and Contrast and Comparison.
- Theory 1: This section will be about four pages (including the description of the three studies).
- Theory 2: This section will be about four pages (including the description of the three studies).
- Contrast and Comparison: This section will be about two pages.
