“Islamic Political Movements Since 1964” Khater, p.266-69.

“Egyptian Writer Sayyid Qutb Articulates a New, Influential Vision of Jihad, 1964” Khater, p. 269-278.

Question 1: What were the conditions in the Arab world that prepared the background for the emergence of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Baath Party?

Question 2: How did Michel Aflaq’s Baath ideology differ from Sayyid Qutb’ ideology in terms of its approach to Islam?

Question 3: How did the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62), the Suez Crisis (1956) and the Arab-Israeli War (1967) affect these ideological developments in the Arab world?

WRITING Papers

Title: Give a title to your paper.

Introduction of Issue (1-2 pages): Introduce your topic clearly and concisely. Give a brief background of the subject and explain to your reader. You write your paper for common reader, who does not know anything about the subject. Do not suppose that the reader knows the background information. Briefly describe your thesis, argument. Make it clear. State your thesis shortly here and give details later.

Main text and research question: Get to the point; only include enough information to make your case. Incorporate your comments, which will strengthen your thesis, argument. Write about the opposing views if there is any. What is the other side/sides of the story? Why do not you agree with them? Take your side and explain why you take that side. Why other side is not acceptable. Give rational explanations. Avoid information mistakes such as wrong chronological order, historical role of involving sides.

Conclusion: Pull the main points together in some concluding remarks. Include your thesis in the conclusion.

Bibliography: Include the list of all sources you used in your paper.

RESEARCH PAPER WRITING GUIDELINES

a-Type, 12-point font. Double-space. (5 points out of 100).

b- Use at least 4 academic sources. (4 points-each- out of 100-You can use course textbooks).

c- Do not use online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia. Use academic books and articles.

d- Paper should be minimum 1,500 and maximum 2,000 words including text, footnotes, and bibliography.

e- Use spellchecker. Read the paper before submitting.

f- Insert page numbers. (2 points).

g- Give a title to the paper. (5 points). Follow “Writing Papers” guide listed above.

h- Explain the thesis clearly in both introduction and conclusion. (10 points).

i- Write about the opposing views. What are the arguments?

j- Do not use slang, contractions (doesn’t = does not), second person (you). (1 point deduction for each violation).

k- Do not mix up their, there, and they are or your and you are and where, were and it is, its and whose, who is and then, than and two, to, too (1 point deduction for each violation).

l- Do not use long quotations. Quotes used in the paper cannot be more than 10% of all text including footnotes and bibliography. (1 point deduction for each violation).

m- Do not write your religion, ideology or philosophy.

n- Use the same tense in a sentence and narrative. (1 point deduction for each violation).

o- Avoid using “I” as much as possible. Avoid using “I think”, “I believe”, “Myself”, “My personal opinion”

p- Avoid information mistakes such as dates, names or roles of the figures in the readings. (3 points deduction for each violation).

q- Pay attention to subject, verb agreement. This is, These are. (1 point deduction for each violation).

r- Include a bibliography at the end (10 points).

s- All submissions must be submitted on Blackboard as MS Word attachment. No email or hard copy submission will be accepted.

t- Email submissions will be treated as late paper and 15(out of 100) points will be deducted.

u- Do not just copy and paste your paper on the assignments submission box. Make sure to attach as a MS Word file. If you submit an empty text, wrong text or a text not in MS word format that cannot be opened. Your paper will be treated as late paper. It is your responsibility to submit the right paper.
