Andrea Yates drowned her 5 children during an episode of postpartum depression. She had a long prior history of mental illness.
She is not alone. Approximately 1-2% of all pregnancies result in post-partum psychosis. Some of those individuals go on to commit infanticide, murdering their children.
Medical errors may be the third leading cause of death in the United States per our textbook in Chapter 12. We have all heard about verdicts in the millions of dollars and yet these errors continue. Do you think that medical malpractice lawsuits are the best way to improve quality of care? Do these lawsuits prevent medical malpractice? Why or why not?
