Choose one of the prompts below (clearly indicate which prompt you’ve chosen). You should write upon both Candide and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. You want to be sure to use the primary text of both works to support your claims.
- In different ways, both texts deal with the idea of free will versus victimhood. When is it legitimate, or necessary, to blame the circumstances of your life, and when is it appropriate, or necessary, to ignore those circumstances?
- These texts also take a close look at religion, specifically Christianity. Where do you find the criticisms or observations made to be just, and where do you find them unjust? Is the distinction some might make between “religion” and “faith” or “spirituality” legitimate, or is it a weak defensive move to avoid accountability?
- How does someone determine when change is good, bad, or neutral? When do you stand your ground to oppose change, fight for change, or simply accept change as inevitable?
Your essay should follow MLA guidelines, which can be found here. In short, it should be 4-5 pages, double-spaced (approx 1200-1500 words). Submit as either a Word or PDF document.
