Research essay – Discuss a controversial topic of bilingualism presenting different sides of the
argument.
Please note that in the topics below, the term ‘bilingualism’ is an umbrella term, meaning the occurrence of more than one language embedded in an individual’s life. I encourage you to incorporate a definition of bilingualism and / or multilingualism in your essay.
Please state your topic in your introductory paragraph and summarise your points in your final summary paragraph. Remember to define terms that are important for your debate.
Also remember to present evidence when debating the controversial topic; i.e. this is not about your personal opinion but rather an evidence based discussion. Think back to the guest speaker’s presentation. What evidence did she report and how did this answer her question, or not? Summarise findings from previous research critically and concisely. Finally, remember that there can be more than two sides to a debate – sometimes there are numerous perspectives – and it is also possible that the controversial statement itself needs to be refined.
