DESCRIPTION:
Using a reflective model/process, students identify one ethical dilemma a nurse may encounter while caring for a patient with addiction or mental health. You will integrate ONE concept/theme/topic/dilemma from the course into your paper and make your own learning, insight, and “aha” moments and critical thinking visible. You will also integrate a concept or theme from another course.
You will clearly state a specific a concept or topic, for example, exposure to violence, trauma, parental substance use, relationships, grief and loss, stigma, family, social determinants of health, vulnerability, resilience, recovery, child maltreatment, cultural safety … (the choice is yours)
Suggested Guide:
The reflective essay can be broken down in three parts:
1. Description:
· Provide a brief description of the concept/theme/topic/ethical dilemma.
· Provide rationale for choosing this concept/theme/topic/dilemma.
· State what ethical principles are involved.
· Indicate factors involved or related to this dilemma for example, specific legislation, value or belief systems, rights of various persons, facts, and available evidence.
· Provide specific description and/or scenarios where possible.
2. Analysis: This part is where you may ask “how, why, what if”. Take a moment to pause, identify, and examine your own thoughts and prior knowledge. Reflective writing is a way to achieve clarity and better understanding of what you are learning—how new ideas may challenge what you already know. What is unfolding, how, why and what will you do with this insight?
· Specify what factors or aspects should be considered in resolving the dilemma.
· Indicate what principles, accountabilities, and resources can be used to guide nurses in resolving the dilemma – be specific.
· Indicate your views.
· Demonstrate critical thinking and reflection.
3. Outcome: Consider some of these questions as you discuss the outcome and next steps. What have I learned from this? What you have yet to learn? What are the implications for your future nursing practice and/or how this learning will shape your future practice? What is the significance of this learning for you and others?
