The lecture will examine the impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) is having on communication. On the one hand, AI, and discussions surrounding advances in communicative AI, appear relatively new. We are living through a period where these development and the impact they might have on society, are frequently deliberated in the popular press. Likewise, similar discussions are increasingly the focus of academic articles, special issues, and related research projects. The history of AI, however, dates back to ancient times. The Greeks, for instance, built mechanised systems, referred to as Automata, that could perform distinct tasks. These examples serve as a primer for how we understand the form and function of technology today. AI has continued to progress through the 21st Century. Yet, there is little doubt that recent advances in AI, following important innovations in machine learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP), to name but a few, implicate a paradigmatic shift of sorts that is socially and culturally noteworthy. Moving forward, then, the purpose of this lecture is to chart the rise of AI in its current form and to consider the ontological questions these communicative leaps pose in the purview of communication theory, and how Human-Machine Communication (HMC) scholarship might provide a suitable lens through which to study the ingoing impact of these developments. The lecture is divided into the following parts.
- Part 1: The History of AI
- Part 2: Communication and AI
- Part 3: A Human-Machine Communication (HMC) agenda for studying Communicative AI
