Argumentative Literary Research Analysis

You will develop an analytical literary argument using one-three primary source(s) (see “options for choosing your primary text(s”) below) and five-seven secondary sources. Because I do not have specific prompts from which to choose, you will be creating your own topic that will guide your research. You will need to have your topic approved before you begin your research. You may choose one of your previous assignments (Essay 1, Essay 2, or Essay 3), expand your argument and analysis, and find & integrate secondary sources. Your essay must have at least 2,200 words; this word count does not include the “Works Cited” page. Because this essay is the most important assignment for the class, you will need to put a great deal of effort into the prewriting process of this essay. You must include a “Works Cited” page for your final essay. Also, you must use third person and present tense for this essay. The rest of the requirements are listed below:

· Develop a focused, specific, argumentative thesis (Don’t make an obvious statement about the text).

· Develop clear topic sentences that introduce specific points that support your thesis.

· Make sure to include direct quotations from the primary text(s) and your secondary sources and use MLA in-text citations when incorporating these quotations.

· Make sure that each paragraph begins with a clear topic sentence.

· Use present tense (Yes. It’s on here twice because it is important!).

· Do not use contractions.

· Use a professional tone (but use your authentic voice).

· Avoid the use of vague words and phrases, slang, cliches, and informal language.

· Use transition words/phrases to connect your points.

· Avoid summarizing the text. Instead, provide analysis of the text, and use examples from the text to support your main points.

· Avoid using first or second person (I, we, us, you). This is important!

· Edit and revise your essay.

· If you choose to extend your essay on the sonnets (Essay 3), you can include up to three sonnets for your primary text(s).

Options for choosing your primary text(s):YOU WILL USE THE FOLLOWING THAT IS HIGHLIGHTED-

William Woodsworth “The world is too much with us “The Disconnect Between Humanity and Nature in “The World Is Too Much with Us”

· One to three of the sonnets from pages 590-599 in the textbook by the following poets (Henry Constable, William Shakespeare, John Milton, William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, Claude McKay, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Gwendolyn Brooks, Gwen Harwood, Harryette Mullen, and Billy Collins)

*NOTE* All topics must be approved by me.

Further Instructions:

· If you choose to expand your first essay, you can choose to include a second primary source. It must be one of the short stories we have read in class. You must find a logical connection between the two works, but you are allowed to write on two short stroires.

· If you choose to expand your second essay on the play, you can only use the play as your primary source.

· If you choose to extend your essay on the sonnets (Essay 3), you can include up to three sonnets for your primary text(s).

Developing a Clear Thesis:

An example of a good thesis is as follows:

By confining the narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper” to a former nursery, Charlotte Perkins Gilman emphasizes the societal limitations of many women near the turn of the twentieth century.

An example of an inappropriate thesis is as follows:

The narrator of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” is confined to a nursery.

Do you see the difference? The first example allows you to develop several body paragraphs in support; the second example is just a statement of fact.

Possible Topic Ideas (These are broad topics; you will still need to present a specific point that is not overtly shown. These are just ideas to get you started with your essay) :

· What techniques are used to heighten suspense?

· Discuss how particular symbols and/or motifs help enhance a theme.

· How do class relationships generate conflict and theme?

· In what way is a particular character marginalized, and how is that marginalization central to the story’s dominant theme?

· Is there a generational divide that causes some form of conflict in the text? What does this divide reveal about the characters or plot?

· Discuss the idea of establishing one’s identity. How does this theme affect the plot?

· How do certain characters deal with literal or metaphorical entrapment?

· Discuss how communication plays a part in the conflict(s) in the text.

· Discuss how time or place play a role in influencing a character’s perspective.

· How do concepts of honor and tradition influence action?

· How does narrative style, including point of view, affect the story and readers?

· Note* If you choose to write about another topic, you must first approve this topic with me.
