Overview
As we have discussed throughout the last several weeks, formal analysis asks us to break down the film into its component parts and discuss how those parts work together to create meaning. Using course concepts to guide you, you will conduct a formal analysis of one or two film’s use of formal elements and make your own unique argument about how they work together to create meaning.
-
You will closely analyze one film we have watched in class. You will pick three formal elements (mise-en-scene, sound, performance, editing, cinematography) and analyze those for how they work separately and together to create meaning in your selected film.
-
Goals of the Paper
-
- Choose a specific element we have covered in class to analyze a film we have watched
- Conduct close formal analysis into a specific film (i.e. pay attention to details!)
- Create a specific, focused argument or thesis about the use of formal elements in film
- Develop your own original interpretation of how formal elements create meaning
- Shot-by-Shot Breakdown Requires you to complete a shot-by-shot breakdown from a film you have analyzed. The shot-by-shot breakdown will ask you to capture all the shots and transitions that make up one (1) scene (either in two films or in one film). You need to include a minimum of 20 shots in your shot-by-shot breakdown. Be sure to use a scene from a sequence you analyze in your paper — the shot-by-shot breakdown will help you include more specific details in your analysis!
-
Because a shot-by-shot breakdown is very comprehensive and time-consuming you will focus on a shorter scene rather than the entire sequence you wrote about. Remember, your shot-by-shot breakdown is NOT included in the 6-8 page requirement. This means your final submission will have an additional 2-3 pages of your shot-by-shot breakdown included.
