For this assignment, you will analyze an historical issue from the first half of U.S. History (pre-1877). Use the above pdf to complete the assignment. You will need to compare at least two opposing perspectives on that issue. Note: My interpretation of the instructions for this assignment are in bold, so please read them. Part I. Introduction: 1.Students will be assigned a secondary article/sources pertaining to the historical period covered in this course from the instructor. The student should be able to locate the article via the San Jacinto College Library System (either in print or through a database). In the case the article is not available via the library, students will locate the article via the web, or via a pdf, or photocopies handed out by the instructor. You have been given a pdf. Use that. Read the article; write an introduction (1 paragraph) in which you discuss the topic. Since you’re comparing 2 perspectives in the article, you will want to introduce each perspective. Obviously, the 2 perspectives include the perspective of Andrew Jackson, and the perspective of the Native Americans. Summarize the perspectives and your opinion regarding each. You will probably also want to round off your paragraph with some type of a thesis statement, i.e.: I agree with Jackson because…but I disagree with… or I think the Cherokees had a point but… etc. Part II. Historical Debate: 2. What is the main argument in each perspective? On what points do they agree or disagree? Here, discuss the perspective of each side in at least one paragraph. 3. Evidence – Analyze the evidence that is provided to support each thesis. What types of evidence are used? Does the evidence support the thesis? In your paragraphs in which you discuss the perspective of each, include evidence that supports those perspectives. Avoid emotional statements—use evidence from the article to support what you write. Part III.Conclusion 4. How did the reading(s) change the way in which you understood the subject? 5.How are the issues presented in the reading(s) still relevant to you today? Please explain how your personal background and life experiences might influence your perspective on this topic? 6. Imagine that you have been asked to tackle a current national or global issue. How would you use the readings to help you do so? Answer the above questions as best you can in your conclusion. The main thing is to include a solid conclusion in which you summarize your thesis (from the first paragraph), i.e.: Ultimately, I think Jackson was right/wrong…I believe the Native Americans were treated fairly/unfairly…this is why.
