my thesis i think is “In response to the environmental damage caused by industrial farming and unsustainable food systems, Halal offers a spiritually grounded framework that promotes sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly food practices, bridging faith and ecological responsibility.” ten page researched argumentive essay heres the rubric This paper examines controversy and establishes an argument based on food and various aspects of the human experience including cultural, nutritional, scientific, psychological, emotional, economic, political, and environmental connections. Students deepen their understanding of the complexities of our individual relationships with food and the processes and influences in our society, cultures, communities, and families that shape how we view food. Course themes of tradition, survival, and identity will frame the collected essays on food relationships covered in the course text that provide a foundation for students as they formulate their own arguments for research and further independent data collection,
This assignment allows students to not only demonstrate their ability to properly synthesize and organize many pieces of sourced textual evidence, but they also reveal their analysis and thinking skills by dominating paragraphs and controlling evidence emphasizing their own voice and connections among sources through MLA citation for their argument. Many, many writing, thinking, analysis, citation, and research skills are demonstrated in this culminating assignment.
Task
Please finish the following steps and submit your completed assignment to Canvas.
- Each student must produce a 10 page ARGUMENT based (including the APPROVED thesis from Week 5) research paper involving deeper inquiry into a specific food topic connecting prior experiences as well as the deep analysis of multiple scholarly and popular texts to the modern world through themes of survival, identity, and/or tradition.
- 7-9 sources must appear throughout the body paragraphs of the paper as well as on the matching Annotated Bibliography located after the 10 page document.
- Introduction and Conclusion paragraphs should follow proper structure including thesis statement inclusion and not have any sourced evidence but instead be student persuasively driven content.
- Body paragraphs: All paragraphs must use proper Body Paragraph Structure with Textual Evidence in EVERY body paragraph Actionsin your paper. Follow and include all the elements of structure in this link. I am evaluating you on your ability to show me you have the skills to follow this specific structure. Follow the outline template!
- Yes, show me you can place one source in a single body paragraph, but also show me that you can combine TWO sources within ONE body paragraph using the topic sentence of that paragraph as the unifying category under which both sources and both pieces of evidence are controlled by YOUR voice. That’s synthesis! Demonstrate the use of two different pieces of textual evidence from two different sources in a single paragraph twice in this paper. That’s one of the major objectives leading to academic skill outcomes for this course.
6. After submitting your paper, go back and check your TURNITIN score. If it’s not 0%, click that number and view the highlighted areas it has indicated require your attention and revision. Revise and resubmit until all highlighted areas are revised and no longer an issue for TURNITIN.
Criteria for Success
See the included Rubric below for special detailed criteria. I will not be providing feedback for this assignment due to the very detailed rubric offered and available to all students from the first day of this course.
“Don’t” and “Instead”
Don’t submit Google Docs. Instead, convert Google Docs to an acceptable .pdf document for all assignments in this course.
Don’t suggest an obvious argument or generally accepted argument. Instead, create a controversial, narrowed, and complex argument, one that provokes us to think! See the examples offered on the DB of Week 5.
Don’t create historical or information based thesis statements. Instead, create a complex, provocative argument! Again, see the examples:)
Don’t include encyclopedias, dictionaries, graduate theses, or reviews as cited sources of evidence in papers. Instead, use required sources as well as optional sources.
Don’t just write a body paragraph around each source. Instead, synthesize and include two or more sources in multiple paragraphs as you discuss and analyze their evidence together, cohesively. REUSE your sources throughout your paper using various pieces of evidence.
Don’t drop quotes; no block quotes. Instead, control each quote with your voice relaying context for only the necessary quoted material needed.
Special considerations
This 10 page Synthesis Paper demonstrates many writing and critical thinking skills. Please note that the MLA heading, extra between paragraph spacing, any images including pictures, graphs, etc., and the Annotated Bibliography are NOT included in the 10 pages required. The 10 pages is all of the content from the introductory paragraph to the concluding paragraph only PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE WITH TEXTUAL EVIDENCEBODY PARAGRAPHS MUST BE STRUCTURED IN A WAY THAT INCLUDES THESE BASIC
ELEMENTS WHEN PROVING YOUR ARGUMENT. PLEASE CREATE BODY PARAGRAPHS
USING THESE REQUIRED ELEMENTS:
STRUCTURE OF A BODY PARAGRAPH WITH ONE PIECE OF EVIDENCE FROM ONE SOURCE :
1. Topic sentence(TS): Each body paragraph must begin with one sentence that states
the category or a specific way that paragraph will prove your thesis/argument or an aspect of
your thesis. Topic sentences do NOT just repeat the thesis or other topic sentences previously
used for other body paragraphs.
2. Elaborate: Don’t move to the evidence too quickly. Instead, follow a topic sentence with
a sentence (or two) which further explains your topic sentence. Clarify what your TS means!
Identify and define key terms that need closer attention. Identify through real life examples.
Tell me how you define or how you see society defining this. Guide and connect to YOUR
reader with your voice.
3. TABS: Establish the credibility and relevance of the source for this paragraph’s evidence by
introducing the source first. In one to two sentences before evidence introduce the TABS (Title,
Author, Background, Summary) of the source. (This step needs only to be done the first time
you use the source)
4. Evidence: Use a combination of quoted evidence as well as paraphrased evidence
followed by in-text citation in parenthesis after. Avoid dropped quotes! No excessive or block
quotes!
The introduction of the textual evidence should lead your reader logically to the textual evidence in a
meaningful way, NOT just…Brady states, “…….” (94).
The introductory statement should point out any contextual issues or relevant information the reader will
need to understand the textual evidence…Delaney continues his use of profanity as he discusses the
death of his third friend he met in rehab: “…….” (47).
You may also paraphrase evidence instead of using an exact quote but use the endnote method afterward
to show author last name and page number (Gozenbach 57-58) to indicate the location of this evidence.
5. Analysis: 2-3 sentences that explain how your textual evidence relates to the paragraph
claim and argument thesis. This is where I see your voice and analysis and critical thinking asyou make the connections between your source and your argument. What is it about the
evidence you present here specifically from this evidence that you want your reader to
understand as it relates to your claim? To your overall argument? Develop and argue the
connections!
HOW TO INCLUDE 2 PIECES OF TEXTUAL EVIDENCE FROM THE SAME SOURCE:
1. Begin with guidelines 1-5 from above for one source.
2. Now introduce and state how and where in the same source (provide context for the
reader as to HOW the author of this source continues to support your specific topic in
your overall argument) further serves evidence for your argument topic.
3. Repeat step 4 from above guidelines.
4. Explain how both pieces of textual evidence contribute to the overall idea or category
of evidence within that paragraph. Then explain how it helps clarify and contribute to
your thesis and overall argument.
HOW TO INCLUDE 2 PIECES OF TEXTUAL EVIDENCE FROM TWO DIFFERENT SOURCES:
1. Begin with guidelines 1-5 from above for one source.
2. Now introduce and state HOW another source/author also relates to this category or
areas of proof.
3. Repeat steps 3 TABS and 4 Evidence from above guidelines for this SECOND source.
4. Explain how both authors, sources, and pieces of textual evidence contribute to the
overall idea or category of evidence within that paragraph.
5. Then explain how these sources help clarify and contribute to your thesis and overall
argument.
Further requirements…
