Writing Guide 3a: Academic Journal Article Analysis Criteria:
Length: ~2-3+ pages
File format: Use a DOC or PDF type when submitting to Dropbox
Select a topic of interest.
- Select an academic journal article from HACC’s databases that is at least 8 pages (or more) in length. Use the Database MLA citation to determine the page length.
- Include an MLA style Work Cited for this selected article.
- If GenAI is used, cite its use on the Work Cited. Review how to cite GenAI.
- Follow the MLA style for the structure of the paper. A review of the MLA style for paper format can be found in MLA Handbook 9th edition in our D2L and here: 1.1–1.2: Margins and Text Formatting, 1.3: Title, 1.4: Running Head and Page Numbers
- Submit the full text PDF of the article to the Dropbox with the final essay.
- Submit the article reading notes to the Dropbox with the final the essay.
- Actively read the article, and address the following points in a numbered list:
A.) State the single focused topic for research
B.) Identify the article title.
C.) Identify the journal’s title.
D.) Identify who publishes/sponsors the journal.
E.) Identify the year this selected article was originally published.
F.) Identify the author(s) and briefly state the author’s other published works (no more
than three) and the author’s formal education (Work only with 2 authors if multiple ones are listed)
G.) Quote the article’s thesis with a MLA in-text citation
H.) State the number of sources the author used for this article.
I.) List three main points of the essay. Explain in in 3-5 sentences for each of the three
points why it is a key idea of the essay.
J.) In two to four paragraphs, describe your experience of reading this article. What
aspects proved difficult? How many times did you read the article? What aspects of the article did you enjoy? What did you learn (about the topic, reading, writing, thinking, or in regards to something else) from reading this article?
K.) Compose four questions you have regarding this topic. Form questions that cannot
be answered by the article, but that can be used as a starting point for further research and to bolster your curiosity about this topic.
