The material that I learned will assist me in my future human services career, I am hoping to be an Administrator at a nursing home. When an elderly person is no longer able to stay in their own home and are uprooted to live in a residential care setting or a long-term care setting, this can be traumatic for the resident and family. Many residents have lived in their homes for 50 or more years. This class has given me skills to address a person who has trauma, and how to work to create a care plan that will provide them with services that they will need to adjust from their move. Often the elderly resident’s spouse passed away, they can no longer live alone, it is no longer safe. I learned other strategies on how to deal directly with a person who needs behavioral health services. This class has given me skills and great tools that will benefit the residents and their families. Having this experience to assist them to be healthier and give them a place where they can live the best quality of life.
Looking at Part 2, Chapter 2 of the Trauma-Informed Care in Behavioral Health Services I might implement some of the strategies that were discussed in this chapter. I believe that Clinical Supervision and Consultation, Implement an Evidence Based Model supervision and training.
These can be cost effective, and outcome relevant services and are important for the client/resident to get the best services as soon as possible to identify and treat their trauma. Training staff in Trauma Informed Settings (TIC) and access to their supervisors so that they can get they can provide feedback and support. Also, implementing training on Secondary Traumatization will be helpful, it is important for us to understand the trauma that a resident may have when they enter a nursing facility. Understanding trauma and what causes trauma is important and how we treat a person who has trauma. I learned that everyone is affected by traumatic experiences differently and sometimes the trauma is hidden and does not show up at first. Everything that I learned is important to my career and will have a positive impact on residents.
