instructions-
I have not encountered any personal or professional experiences directly related to the topics covered in this course so far. However, as a Human Services major with a concentration in family and children and a minor in criminal justice, I recognize the importance of understanding legal and ethical issues surrounding confidentiality and privacy in the field. My goal of becoming a social worker means I will need to be well-versed in the laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines governing the handling of sensitive client information. The course outcomes focusing on applying ethical standards to real-world scenarios and recommending strategies to address ethical issues are highly relevant to my future professional aspirations (SNHU, n.d.).
After reviewing the syllabus and assignment guidelines, I anticipate needing to draw upon several key resources to succeed in this course. The textbook by Corey (2020) and the ethical standards laid out by the National Organization for Human Services (n.d.) will provide a strong foundation for understanding the core concepts and principles. Additional sources like the Guttmacher Institute’s overview of consent to reproductive health services for young people will help contextualize the material. I will also seek out information specific to my state’s Department of Health and Human Services regarding confidentiality and release of PHI. My instructor and classmates can support my learning by engaging in substantive discussions, providing insights from their own experiences, and offering feedback on assignments.
As I embark on this course, I recognize that I am entering a complex landscape where technological advances like the internet have introduced new challenges for upholding privacy and confidentiality (SNHU, n.d.). However, I am committed to thoroughly understanding the relevant laws, ethical standards, and best practices. By immersing myself in realistic case studies and thoughtfully applying the principles I learn, I aim to prepare myself to navigate ethical dilemmas adeptly as a human services professional.
I look forward to collaborating with my peers and instructor as I work towards achieving the course outcomes and growing in my ability to serve clients with integrity.
