In George Orwell’s 1984, privacy is considered criminal. Privacy threatens order, so it is erased by surveillance and replaced by membership in government-organized activity. People are required to abandon the quest to develop themselves as individuals and instead put their energy into developing their social selves by participating in various kinds of organized activity which is structured for them.

the failed attempts at intimacy and relationships between characters;
the corruption of family ties
the devaluing of reading and writing by the dystopian governments;
the repeated mindless slogans and the gaslighting characters are taught to embrace;
the constant distractions of entertainment and busy activity they are expected to participate in;
the mindless, relentless, technical work they do every day;
the demand from peers that they conform to certain standards of appearance and behavior;
the constant surveillance they come to expect and accept
the threat of war which leads to fear, re-directs anger, and is transformed into patriotism
the role of architecture in preserving and maintaining private rituals and social norms.
