In addition to being able to understand the concepts from the assigned class readings, it is important to be able to think critically about what you have read and to extend the information in the readings through engaging in active dialogue. Students will be asked to lead a Consultancy Protocol regarding a dilemma of equity within their school or community. The Art of Coaching for Equity will provide a structure for your protocol. You will facilitate your protocol during our third course meeting (Oct 11), and it will last roughly 20-25 minutes. (CLO 1,2,3,5,6)
The primary goal for these discussions is to illuminate the major concepts of equity in the book. We will discuss the structure of the protocol in our first class. Resources are posted below to help guide the consultancy protocol and the development of the dilemma you want to address.
Step 1 – Choosing a dilemma at your school, department, or district:
- Read the Consultancy Dilemma (Consultancy Dilemmas.pdf Download Consultancy Dilemmas.pdf)
- Answer questions 1, 2, 3, and 4 – (You will turn this in)
Step 2 – Understand the Consultancy Protocol (Consultancy Protocol Overview-1.pdf) Download Consultancy Protocol Overview-1.pdf):
- Read the Consultancy Protocol
- Review the protocol steps in order to understand the role of the “Presenter” (will be you when you present your dilemma to a group) and the “Facilitator” (a different member of the group each time a new presenter presents)
Step 3 – Planning for Equity-Focused Conversation (Planning for an Equity-Focused Conversation – Coaching for Equity.pdf) Download Planning for an Equity-Focused Conversation – Coaching for Equity.pdf):
- In preparation for presenting your dilemma and working toward transformational change through equity-focused conversations, respond to 1-13 that are relevant to your dilemma.
- Identify “the client” as being the particular stakeholder(s) who you believe need to change self-awareness, mindset, policies, and/or practices. This will likely be staff member(s), teacher, counselor, coach, administrator, board member – someone who has an impact on students and/or your school community.
- Please write your responses after responding to the questions in Step 1 and submit as one document prior to class on October 11 to help prepare you for the presentation of your dilemma.
The Equity Rubric (The Equity Rubric – Coaching for Equity.pdf):Download The Equity Rubric – Coaching for Equity.pdf):
- The Equity Rubric is an optional tool to assist you with reflecting and evaluating indicators of equity and inequity within ten (10) teacher/staff/school-centered domains
- The rubric is a tool to help begin the conversation around equitable and inequitable actions and practices that impact beliefs and the student experience
- This tool is not necessary for this assignment, but may be helpful to you as a leader in your organization
