Some people think that extinction is a normal part of nature and humans should not try to stop it. While this idea sounds understandble, I believe we must protect animals because most of today’s extinctions are caused by people, and nature needs many kinds of animals and plants to stay healthy.
People who say we should not interfere think that weak species naturally die out and the stronger ones stay alive. They point out that, for millions of years, animals have died out without human help, and new species have taken their place. For example, the woolly mammoth went extinct thousands of years ago because of natural climate change, long before modern industry. From this view, protecting animals may seem unnecessary.
However, this thinking ignores the fact that animals are disappearing much faster today than in the past, mostly because of people’s actions such as destroying forests, building cities, and overfishing. So, modern extinction is not fully “natural” but often caused by humans.
First, we should fix the harm we cause to animals. If people cut down forests or hunt illegally, animals like the snow leopard could disappear forever. It is wrong to do nothing. The return of the giant panda in China shows that protecting animals can really work.
Second, animals and plants are important for keeping nature healthy, and people need this balance too. For example, if bees die out, many plants will not grow because they need bees to carry pollen. This can cause less food for people. By saving these animals, we also protect farming, the weather, and our own lives.
In conclusion, although some believe that extinction is natural and we should not interfere, this view forgets that humans are the main cause of most modern species loss. Because we are responsible and because biodiversity helps us survive, protecting animals is necessary.
