Module 3 | Professionalism and Civility in Nursing Practice and Cognitive Rehearsal Learning Activity

Module 3 | Professionalism and Civility in Nursing Practice and Cognitive Rehearsal Learning Activity ATI Civility Mentor: Professionalism and Civility in Nursing Practice and Cognitive Rehearsal Learning Activity Overview Practicing nursing through simulated experience is an important part of nurse education. This activity allows you to practice the essential skills needed through a simulation. This virtual learning experience will place you in a practice environment with Alex, a newly graduated nurse who recently landed his first nursing position in a medical-surgical unit. His charge nurse, Rio, is new to the charge nurse role. Alex’s transition has been a bit stressful, and he’s still unsure how to best communicate with Rio. Alex recently brought a patient safety issue to Rio’s attention, but his approach was somewhat unprofessional. After reflecting on his encounter with Rio, Alex plans to meet with her to discuss the situation. Instructions This activity is divided into two parts. You MUST complete Part 1 before moving on to Part 2. Part 1 of this activity will be completed on the ATI Testing website. To access ATI, use the ATI Testing link in the Canvas Navigation Menu or select this ATI Testing link to access your login page. Log in and navigate to the Learn tab to access the assigned virtual simulation in ATI Civility Mentor. Part 1: Practice Activity 1. Locate Professionalism and Civility in Nursing Practice on the ATI website and select Resolving Conflict to Ensure Patient Safety (2 minutes). 2. Choose Practice: Rio (8 minutes). The conversations will automatically play. 3. Practice using evidence-based techniques to play the part of Alex using “I” statements, open-ended questions, and emphasizing shared interests to improve communication and working relationships. Use the virtual coach and thought bubbles to enhance learning. 4. Once you have completed the practice, select “Feedback Summary: View Feedback on Communication Techniques.” 5. Next, select “Take the Emotion Out of It.” Learn how the CUS model developed by TeamSTEPPS may be used to ensure that colleagues address a critical patient safety issue. 6. Select “Resources and Acknowledgements: Browse Resources.” Choose three from the list to read and study in greater depth. 7. Once you have completed the virtual simulation, download the certificate of completion for submission. Part 2: Reflective Questions Create a Microsoft Word document and respond to the following questions: 1. How was patient safety compromised in the scenario? 2. How successful was the CUS model in addressing the patient safety issue? How would you describe the experience? What went well? 3. What would you do again? What would you do differently? 4. How might you apply what you have learned in your clinical practice? Due • Sunday, by 11:59 p.m. Submission and Assessment Guidelines * Submit a copy of the certificate of completion from Part 1. * Submit your Microsoft Word document from Part 2 with the questions clearly listed and answered. * Each response should be 2-3 sentences in length, clear, concise, and use correct grammar. * This activity will be submitted via Turnitin.
