Assignment:For your last major writing assignment, you are required to write a 1750-word minimum research-basedanalytical essay on one of the plays from this semester’s selected readings. You must have one primary source(the play) and a minimum of three cited secondary sources which help to interpret the primary text. Also, you arerequired to use San Jac library database sources. General internet sources are not allowed. The assignmentrequires an analysis of the literary work you’ve selected using sources of criticism which comment directly onthe primary source (your selected play). Thus, you are to provide an interpretation of the work which is framed inthe larger social commentary available, perhaps acknowledging which sources agree with your point of view andwhich may differ, citing both the primary source(s) and the secondary sources—the articles and such—whereappropriate. You may structure your analysis using one of the human conditions we have discussed in the course.Your essay will be graded on how well your own interpretation of the text(s) is integrated with or informed byyour secondary sources…using quotes and paraphrases (from both primary and secondary sources) to illuminatethe ideas, themes, or meaning of said text(s) and how they expose, illuminate, or add commentary to thisparticular social condition. The previously established rules regarding font and formatting still apply, and both in-text citations as well as the Works Cited page must follow the guidelines provided in your MLA Handbook.Possible Topics:● Literature has always been one effective way to explore and address social issues in human culture. Stories, plays,and other types of fictional media often have some social or cultural concern embedded in the thematicbackground of a narrative. A social issue is some problem or concern connected to a larger issue that affectssociety in general. Overall, literature has proven to be one of the best ways to understand and combat the difficultsocial issues, or problems that affect certain groups of people in negative ways, that shape our world.A few of the social issues that literature primarily wrestles with are the institution of marriage, parent/childdynamics, age/aging, gender issues, ethnicity, human rights, religion, etc. Consider the four plays (Medea,Antigone, A Doll’s House, and The Importance of Being Earnest) included in the Drama Unit and choose one playthat you find interesting. Read the play, select a social issue the text covers, and consider the social commentary theauthor makes. Formulate an interpretation of the text and use the play to help explore the issue.
Annotated Bibliography RequirementsThis assignment is designed to help you evaluate sources of information. An annotatedbibliography includes all of the citation information needed to find a source and aparagraph describing the source.1. Find a minimum of four sources (one primary and three secondary) on your topic– these should be your best sources so that means you will likely have reviewed atleast twice this many.2. Your primary source is the text that you have chosen (Medea, Antigone, A Doll’sHouse, or The Importance of Being Earnest).3. Summary Annotation: This type summarizes the source for the readers,letting them know the central theme of the book, plus information aboutthe author and the target audience of the book.b. Evaluative Annotation: This type of annotation goes into more depthabout the author, including any expertise and bias they have. It mightcompare the work to other works and delve into why it was used for thetopic, along with the strengths and weaknesses you found.7.
