Initial Post (Due Saturday by 11:59 pm CST): As you read this week’s required readings, consider the relationship between phonetics, phonological awareness, and phonemic awareness in language development. In a minimum of 300 words, answer the following questions:
- How does a strong understanding of the physical properties of speech sounds (phonetics) contribute to an individual’s ability to develop phonological awareness skills?
- Explain how speech language pathologists use their phonemic awareness skills when assessing a child’s speech sound production when transcribing using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

Initial Post (Due Saturday by 11:59 pm CST): Watch the video on Letter and sounds correspondences (Phonics: Stage 2)
(also in this week’s readings and resources).
In your initial post, identify and describe the level of phonological awareness that the instructor is teaching to her students. Then, go to Starfall
(also in this week’s readings and resources). This free online resource contains activities within each area of phonological awareness and is designed for online use by children. Explore the website and pick one activity the teacher could assign after finishing her whole group lesson. Share the activity with your classmates in your post, and explain the lesson in detail. Include the following:
- share the hyperlink to the activity
- level of phonological awareness instruction
- what the child must do to successfully complete the activity
- how you would scaffold the lesson for struggling readers
Your post should have a minimum of 300 words.
