Writing an ethnography is based on participant-observation and involves immersing oneself in a culture or community and writing about social norms and interactions. For this in-class exercise (which will be done outside of class), spend the week leading up to July 4th observing a culture or community. Immerse yourself in the setting that you choose and keep a detailed journal of your observations. Your subject may be anything you choose. For example, you could write about a healthcare culture or community in which you participate, observe the social norms and interactions of a coffee house, provide qualitative research on our academic community, or anything else that inspires you.
