2. My father’s inspiring blend of compassion and charisma left a lasting impression on me as I grew up. As a primary care physician, he always displayed an altruistic attitude towards his patients. After my dad finished playing soccer with my three brothers and me, I saw how he seamlessly transitioned into caring for his patients over the phone.On early Saturday hospital visits, I witnessed the transformative power of empathy. Patients would light up when he greeted them with care and a simple “Hello, my friend.” I now understand his gift, which I once admired as empathy in action, a quality I strive to embody daily. In 2009, we moved to Mendoza, Argentina, to be closer to our family. There, among the vineyards, my understanding of the influence of culture and community on health deepened. My father’s work, confined to a desk by paperwork, was far from the direct patient care he cherished and experienced in the United States. This experience taught me the profound and intrinsic value of patient care. I now gain energy from each interaction, understanding that this truly makes medicine meaningful and impactful. Years later, as I performed an autonomic nervous system and balance test on a Spanish-speaking patient, I could transform that lesson into real life. The patient arrived anxious and unsure of what the test involved and why it was important. I could explain each step in Spanish; through time, I saw her slowly relax and ease her tension as her smile returned. We began talking about her hometown in Nicaragua and how she misses her family, something I could relate to. What started as a clinical procedure became a human conversation, reminding me that presence and trust are healing. I have learned that empathy is not an easy task to accomplish in medicine. We face problems that challenge empathy, such as speaking different languages, cultural differences, and personal struggles. However, these are the moments in which empathy shines the brightest, and we can truly make a difference in someone’s life. From translating for patients to advocating for mental wellness on campus through the S.A.V.E. Club, I have worked to carry my father’s value of connection to others. I have learned that showing up, actively listening, and treating people like family can change someone’s day or life. The power of these connections in our work cannot be overstated; they truly make a difference in patient care.
