Health Disparities and Diabetes Risk in Puerto Rican Migrant Communities: A Historical and Socioeconomic Analysis”

This assignment will integrate course material on different aspects of immigrant health. This assignment is an opportunity to become familiar with the literature on a specific topic related to immigrant health that is of particular interest to you. There are two parts to this assignment; each part is worth 20 or 30 points. The two parts will be integrated to form a final research paper due at the end of the quarter; for a total of 9-10 pages – double-spaced with one inch margin, and 12-point font. Essays should draw from course readings, supplemental readings, and other material; with at least 15-20 references to empirical studies (scholarly journals and reports). Paper and references should follow the American Psychological Association’s (APA) style guide. . Students may consult the following resources regarding APA style: Purdue University’s Online Writing LabLinks to an external site.

SUBMIT FULL PAPER (PART 1 and 2).

Part 2 [30 points; Due June 10 by 11:59PM]

Part 2 is composed to two main sections.

Section 1: SDH model. First students will add an analysis of their populations’ health grounded in the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) framework and support their analysis with empirical evidence. More specifically, apply the SDH model (3-4 pages). What are the primary explanations/determinants for the selected populations’ health? Present empirical evidence on the determinants of health or factors that influence how immigrants experience the condition you have identified. Use the SDH framework to organize your analysis. Address 3 domains of the SDH framework. In addition, address if and how immigration status and/or immigration policy and enforcement play a role on the populations’ health, as it relates to your selected immigrant-group and health topic (i.e., immigration as a SDH).

Address 3 domains of the SDH framework (i.e., select three from the following: Economic stability, neighborhood and physical environment, education, food, community and social context, and health care system).

  • Address a single indicator within each domain. For instance, Economic Stability includes the following indicators: Employment, income, expenses, debt, medical bills, support. You can elect to focus only on employment.
  • Include at least 3 scholarly articles to support each domain.
    • Whenever possible identify research articles that examines the relationship between the indicator and target health outcomes among the target immigrant group. For instance, if you are looking at employment, you may use an article on exploitation in workplace and how it’s related to mental health (i.e., target health condition) among undocumented adults (i.e., target group). The second article, still focused on employment, may focus on type of jobs or how many hours are worked weekly and how this is related to mental health among undocumented adults.
    • If you are unable to find articles that address your specific group/health condition, you can extrapolate findings and make an argument for how findings apply to your target population/health condition.

In addition, include an additional section on immigration as a social determinant of health. Address if and how immigration (e.g., immigration status, immigration policy and enforcement) plays a role on the populations’ health, as it relates to your selected group and health condition.

Section 2: Implications for policy, practice, and research. Next, add a discussion on implications for policy, practice, and research. Implications should be grounded in your findings in the SDH model section above. This section should be about 1.5-2 pages. Address the following

1. Policy recommendations. Consider the research you synthesized for the six domains within the SDH framework and immigration as a SDH (e.g., what can be done to address food insecurity or what can be done to address exploitation in the workplace?), and develop recommendations for addressing the issue(s). Include at least 2 policy recommendations. Use the following format for each policy recommendation: (a) Identify the specific finding you are targeting, (b) what is the implication – if the issue is not addressed what are the consequences or why are policy changes needed? (c) what is the policy recommendation – what changes are needed to policy or what new policies are needed? Policy recommendations can be at a federal, state, or county level. Include examples to illustrate the proposed policy change. Also, consider feasibility issues in implementing the proposed policies.

2. Practice recommendations. What can be done at a practice level? Practice implications could range from direct practice (interactions with medical providers) to community-based efforts (e.g., to improve access, advocate, engage community in change actions etc.). Include at least one practice recommendation: Use the following format: (a) Identify the specific finding you are targeting, (b) what is the implication – if the issue is not addressed what are the consequences or why are these changes needed? (c) what is the practice recommendation – what practices changes are needed to better serve the immigrant community? Practice implications can focus on what organizations or institutions can do to better serve the immigrant community. Practice implications can also involve a process for change – such as creating spaces for immigrants to be involved in change efforts.

3. Research recommendations. Include at least one recommendation for future research. What gaps remain in the research? What additional research is needed to better understand the health and well being of the immigrant group or health condition? How would the research you recommend improve what we know about the specific immigrant group you are focused on?

  • Include revisions to part 1 in red or highlighted in yellow. If the revisions are not identified, credit will not be awarded.
  • Use headings and subheadings to support the organization of your paper.

EX: Main heading: Part 2: SDH and Mental Health among Undocumented Immigrants. Subheadings: include a subheading for each SDH domain and Immigration as a SDH.

  • Include an intro and conclusion.
  • See rubric for additional details.

It should be a continuation of part 1, I have provided part 1 below. Thank you!
