Covid-19 was characterized as a “new disease” caused by a coronavirus not previously seen in humans.

Address the following:

  • Describe the factors that contribute most to the emergence of new diseases, such as Covid-19, Zika, Ebola, and SARS.
  • How frequently do new diseases emerge?
  • Describe the factors that contribute most to the re-emergence/re-appearance of diseases that had significantly declined and thought to no longer pose a serious threat, such as West Nile and tuberculosis.
  • Make an argument as to whether it is possible to completely eradicate an infectious disease.

Minimum requirements for each Discussion:

  • Respond to the original question(s) by writing 400-500 words constructed together in complete, coherent, and grammatically correct sentences. Minimum is 400 words and maximum is 500 words (this does not include references). A high quality response contains information from the textbook or other valid source, applies a concept from the course in a meaningful way, and facilitates understanding of the course material or topic. Remember, you have a limited amount of time to research the topic and create an informative, organized, and articulate discussion post. Any response that is too short to properly address the topic will not receive credit. Your posts must be at least 400 words (it is difficult to demonstrate that you really researched the topic in less than a couple paragraphs). If your discussion post is an opinion that is not substantiated by relevant data or references, you will not receive credit.
  • The initial post must include at least one reputable website/book reference/article reference, etc. about the topic or any major sources that you used to obtain information. If you are using a direct quote in your post, it must be in quotation marks and the source identified. I have no objection to one or two sentences being taken directly from another source, but the majority of the discussion should be in your own words. DO NOT copy and paste parts or entire chunks of information from websites into your posts. If I suspect that a student has copied material without referencing it, they will receive a zero for the discussion. If you forget to post your references, just reply to your own post and post them in that separate post. You must cite all references.
  • Respond to at least 3 (three) other posts about the discussion question. Your response must continue the discussion in some way (don’t just agree or comment on how well-written their post was). Responses should be 70-100 words – this length requirement is in place so that you can adequately add new information from your continued research. When you respond to others, address the person you are responding to by their first name – this makes the discussion threads easier to follow. Any response that is too short to properly address the topic will not receive credit. Your reply must be at least 70 words. Your reply must be more than, “I agree with your comments.” or “I said the same thing, I agree” or “You really summarized the information well.” or “Great post, I learned a lot, thanks!”. Your responses to others should continue the conversation, either by summarizing and directing others to an article/book/website/textbook chapter you read, posing relevant questions based on your new research, or clarifying a misconception that your classmate has. Find something that you can analyze, add to, critique, explain, disagree with, etc. Be aware that you must post the minimum number of meaningful responses to receive full credit for discussions.
  • All posts must use courteous and appropriate forms of communication and interaction. This means no personal attacks, obscene language, or intolerant expression. All viewpoints should be respected. Remember, everyone in the class will be reading your discussion and you don’t want the content of your discussion to be masked by rudeness, poor grammar, and incorrect spelling and punctuation.
