Explore the impact that the female characters in the novel “The Wars”have on the male characters. How do you explain in terms of the power dynamics between the two genders at the time and the traditional/stereotypical gender roles that defined each?

The Wars is a novel by Timothy Findley, written in 1977. The story centers around Robert Ross, a young officer from Canada and his experiences during World War I. This novel is about emotional experiences, disobedience, guilt, etc…. Many issues are touched upon in the novel and are worth discussed in essays. • Do you have any ideas to present in an essay on The Wars by Timothy Findley? If you have problems here, do not panic! • You will be given several interesting ideas, any one of which you can introduce in your final summative essay. • With that said, you are highly encouraged to write your own original thesis statement. You are to write an academic, formal, literary essay complete with an introduction, body paragraphs, transitions, and a conclusion. • It should be no more than five typed pages • 750-1250 words, double spaced, including quotations. The support component will assessed a mark of zero if the essay is not documented by parenthetical notation, and MLA works cited. • A mark of zero will be given for any plagiarized essay. Your paper will be checked for plagiarism. • Your primary text will be The Wars; however, you may use secondary sources, such as print and internet sources, as long as you provide the MLA citations. • The ISU is more than simply the essay and presentation. Marks will also be allocated for the essay writing process. The various stages of your progress will be monitored; records of discussions in forum, peer- editing, writing plans, and drafts should be kept and will enter into the overall evaluation of study achievement.

– the essay starts with a first few sentences which are a general, captivating and interesting

lead-in to the topic

last sentence in introductory paragraph is the THESIS statement, which is the

main point/idea of the essay plus three illustrations.

2. 1ST BODY PARAGRAPH:

a) TOPIC SENTENCE (1st point in thesis)

b) EXAMPLES/QUOTATIONS

c) COMMENT/INSIGHT

d) CLOSING SENTENCE (relates back to thesis)

the first sentence is a TOPIC sentence, which is an exact statement of what

the paragraph is going to be about.

the rest of the paragraph includes specific examples and quotations from the

text

3. 2ND BODY PARAGRAPH:

a) TOPIC/TRANSITION SENTENCE (2nd point in thesis)

b) EXAMPLES/QUOTATIONS

c) COMMENT/INSIGHT

d) CLOSING SENTENCE (relates back to thesis)

N.B. Remember that topic sentences for body paragraphs #2 and #3 must also be

TRANSITION sentences, which connect the essay in a “flowing,” logical order of

progression. Using connective words and phrases such as “similarly,” “moreover,”

“furthermore,” “in addition to,” “another example of,” and so forth, assist in

constructing effective transition sentences.

again, supporting quotations must illustrate this particular point, and

examples must also include some insightful commentary of your own

etc…

5. CONCLUSION:

first sentence is the THESIS RE-STATEMENT, which is the main idea/point and

three supporting arguments of the essay re-worded or at least re-ordered

the format of the rest of the concluding paragraph is the opposite of the

introductory paragraph: instead of moving from the general to the specific, the

conclusion moves from the specific to the general. Basically, it should be a general

summary of the points covered in the essay and conclusions arrived at. Remember

that there should be reflective analysis and insight (in every paragraph, not just this

final one), and do not introduce any new ideas in the conclusion. In this case the end

of the concluding paragraph moves toward the extremely general: the great

tradition in literature which includes many different versions of the journey

6. WORKS CITED:7

at the end of your essay, start a new page and put “Works Cited” centred at

the top of the page on the line following the header

using the works-cited style below, list all of the sources you quote from or

refer to in your essay in alphabetical order by author:
