Submit a proposal for an interdisciplinary research project, lesson plan, research paper, or personal narrative that might address a pressing issue facing you, as well as local, national, and/or global communities today. Some examples of such pressing issues include, as Raboteau demonstrates: pandemics, climate change, racism, authoritarianism, poverty, inequality, crumbling support for public education, gender discrimination, and/or the prison industrial complex. There are many other topics you may choose of course. Once you have identified a topic, locate and evaluate at least three different, peer-reviewed, scholarly articles, each from a different discipline, addressing some aspect of it. These articles may come from disciplines in the humanities or the natural sciences, the social sciences, or even from professional disciplines such as law or medicine. Putting the articles, along with the disciplinary perspectives they represent, into conversation, compose a five-to-seven-page (5-7) critical examination of the articles, showing how they help (or hinder) further research into the topic. Lastly, outline a potential course of interdisciplinary research that poses a compelling research question for further study of the topic. All projects should thus have at least three sections: a statement of the topic (and why you have chosen it); an interdisciplinary survey of at least three articles addressing the topic; and an outline for further research, writing, or presentation. Please provide complete article references and links with your assignment on the last day of classes. For this project, I am focusing specifically on economic inequality and how it affects access to educational resources in early childhood education across different neighborhoods in New York City. By economic inequality, I mean the disparities in funding, income levels, and public investment between communities—especially those in low-income versus higher-income areas. This type of inequality impacts early education by limiting the availability and quality of crucial resources, such as classroom materials, qualified teachers, support staff, access to specialists (like speech or occupational therapists), and enrichment programs.
