WI Essay (3 pages min.- 5 pages max.). Portrait of a Lady on Fire. NO EXTENSION Study how the film is a subversion of a male perspective, and how it shows the ways patriarchy constricts the lives of women. Due May 13th at 11:59 pm I am looking for personal reactions, not for rehashed and lofty ideas found elsewhere. USE YOUR OWN IDEAS IN YOUR OWN WORDS Choose 2 or three impactful personal ideas, go back to the film to illustrate each idea, explain how the chosen elements from the film support each idea. Do not follow the chronological order of the film, but go from the weakest to the strongest point Do not summarize and/or narrate the plots or describe events, extract ideas and meanings and show how they are expressed. You are absolutely prohibited from using Artificial Intelligence (AI) language models – including but not limited to ChatGPT – to create content for assignments, projects, or any form of assessment and/or write them (all work submitted must be your original creation and your own writing). If you create and/or plagiarize, you will receive an automatic F on the assignment and will be referred to the administration for disciplinary action. Reasons: You are in a course to acquire knowledge and skills; it defeats the purpose if you do not do the work personally. Anything that is done by someone or something other than the students themselves is considered cheating All AI tools make mistakes that you are not able to detect since you are learning the subject AI invents references and quotes AI is not specific, it is vague, and it provides a lot of verbiage that sounds good but that does not really answer the prompt, and it does not provide specific examples from the texts and does not prove how those specific elements support ideas. Remember to analyze, write about your own ideas. Do not summarize events (describing a scene does not prove anything, you always have to prove your point), or plots, say whether you like it or not. Do not state whether you think the director, and or actors/actresses did a good job. Do not talk about when the film was made and by whom gratuitously, unless it is part of a point. Do not summarize the plot, do not describe the film or scenes. Start with the ideas and refer back to specific elements of the films that support your ideas without describing the scenes. No matter how long a paper is, follow the suggestions provided in the hand-outs. It will enable you to have well organized and structured paper. Be specific! Use your own ideas, and your own words. I am not looking for perfection or a text that sounds good. I want you to really think about all the texts, read all the course materials provided, and show you understand them and that you can incorporate them in your personal reflections. Including: 1. Who are the film’s 4 main characters (names, positions, professions, occupation, brief psychological portrait) 2. In your opinion, why does most of the film take place on an island? 3. What are the various instances where fire is present? Think about the scenes where fire is present, and explain its meaning and significance in those scenes. 4. What does the mother symbolize? 5. What are the intimate scenes, and what do you think of the way they are filmed? 6. Make a parallel between the colors of the film and the colors of the painting 7. In your opinion, why does the film open on the scene where Marianne’s students are looking at her in order to draw her portrait? 8. What effect does it have that the film is set in the 18th century? 9. In which location (s) are the two women most free? 10. What elements make the scene at the concert hall intense? Explain why 1. Analyze the ways in which you can tell the intimate/sex scenes are not meant for the male gaze. 2. Analyze how the island is simultaneously a prison and a place of freedom for the women. 3. Analyze the various gazes between women 4. In your opinion why has the director chosen to set the film in the 18th century and not the 21st century? 5. What do you think of the way the director has tackled the issue of abortion? You need to provide at least one to two paragraphs per subdivision that clearly cover the topic.
