The following are the directions giving everything needed for the following paper, also at the end I will be supplying my outline as well, which already has my biotechnology/science issue, multiple sources, and sections which I would like you to use, this paper outline will be at the end of the directions in the attached files.
“You will pick a biotechnology or science issue of your choice and ask the following: Is it ethical to use this technology or scientific knowledge?
Your paper should include the following information:
- A section introducing the ethical question around a scientific issue or around the use of a biotechnology. The introduction should contain scientific background information and a historical perspective. The biological basis of the topic must be addressed and explained in this section. Be specific and discuss how the biotechnology or science works.
- Articulate the bioethical viewpoints of using science and/or technology with a substantive section explaining the various perspectives. Discuss each viewpoint and describe the arguments supporting that viewpoint. Do not argue for any one perspective. The best way to achieve a well-rounded perspective is to consider the different stakeholders with an interest in this issue.
- Take an ethical stand position and argue your viewpoint constructively. There may be nuance in this section. It is conceivable that using a particular science/technology might be argued to be ethical but with limits. Support your argument with facts, principles, and moral theories that support your viewpoint. Your argument should be scholarly, not based upon an emotional response.
Additional requirements:
A cover page with the title, your name and date submitted.
About 2000 to 2500 words to cover the topic. This works out to be about 6-7 pages with 12-point font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides. However, your document does not have to be double-spaced- it can be single spaced.
Keep quotations to a minimum. More is not necessarily better. Although your paper should contain some appropriately placed quotes, it should not consist entirely of someone else’s ideas or opinions.
Internal citations for quotes and paraphrasing throughout the paper, documented according to MLA format. See http://www.calstatela.edu/library/guides/3mla.pdf for information on MLA format.
Generative AI should not be used. I want to hear your voice and thoughts in this paper.
Use a minimum of five research sources.
- You may use open access Scientific Journals (See http://www.doaj.org/ for a listing of appropriate journals).
- You may also use an appropriate internet site.
- You may have more than 5 references.
Include a “Works Cited” (reference) page with references documented according to the MLA format. All “Works Cited” references must have an internal citation in the body of the paper referring back to them.
Before picking a topic ask yourself the following:
What is the technology/science?
How does it work?
What are the issues behind this topic?
Why do we have the problem?
What are some approaches to understanding/solving the problem?
What are the ethical questions that arise from these issues?
Should we use it/should it be done? How? Why?
What happens if we do/don’t?
After picking a topic:
Develop an understanding of the topic
Form an ethical question
Possible topics (not comprehensive)
1. Stem cell use in basic research
2. Genetically modified bacteria
3. Shortage of organs for organ replacement
4. Patents on genes and gene products
5. Using personal genome information (health care, jobs, etc…)
6. Xenotransplantation
7. Cloning of extinct animals
8. Selection of a child’s genetic characteristics using technology
9. Stem cell therapy to treat genetic diseases
10. Cloning technologies for infertile couples
