The following assignments will be focused on the following competencies:
Competency 3: Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice
· apply their understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and system levels;
· engage in practices that advance social, economic, and environmental justice.
Competency 6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
• apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to engage with clients and constituencies; and
• use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage diverse clients and constituencies.
Students will write a 4-5 page reflection paper on High Rise Stories: Voices From Chicago Public Housing & 70 Acres in Chicago: Cabrini Green: The Demolition of Public Housing in Chicago. Students are expected to utilize course material to identify key concepts to analyze and offer their reflections as it relates back to competencies 3 and 6.
Students will answer the following:
• Do you believe the government should provide housing to those who can’t afford it? Why or why not?
• In your opinion, is public housing offered fairly in our country?
• How does an outsider’s opinion about a neighborhood or community differ from an insider’s?
• What are the differences between civil rights, economic rights and societal obligations? How do they intersect? How do the differences impact the narrators in High Rise Stories and 70 Acres?
• How open to interpretation are the words “rights” and “obligations?”
• How do people’s political perspectives, and/or personal experiences, shape their opinions about public housing and other societal issues?
• What are the benefits and challenges of creating a Housing Bill of Rights?
• Is there a difference between legal rights and societal responsibilities? If so, what are they?
