I need your help with preparing my part of the SF07 presentation.
My section is:
“Ethical considerations in decisions about future treatment and potential prevention of this and other genetic diseases”
The focus will be on dwarfism and a treatment called Vosoritide.
Here’s the full plan — we need a total of 4 slides:
Slide 1 – Introduction to Vosoritide
- Briefly explain dwarfism and achondroplasia
- Introduce Vosoritide (how it works, who it’s for, and why it matters)
- Include a small diagram or image showing how Vosoritide works in the growth plate
- Add 1 primary source
Slide 2 – Ethical Analysis of Vosoritide
- Use the 4 pillars of medical ethics:
Autonomy – Beneficence – Non-maleficence – Justice - Include a table showing how each ethical pillar applies to Vosoritide
- Add 2 primary sources
Slide 3 – Future Prevention & Genetic Ethics
- Discuss PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis)
- Can it be used to prevent conditions like dwarfism?
- Discuss if it’s ethical to choose embryos based on height/genetics
- Add 1 primary and 1 secondary source
Slide 4 – Conclusion
- Summarize the key ethical points
- End with a final ethical question:
“Are we curing a condition, or shaping the kind of people we accept?”
