For the final essay, you will be asked to read three questions carefully and then choose only ONE question to answer. You will then write a thesis-centered essay of at least 500 words in response to this one question using direct quotations from both “The Gatekeepers Who Get to Decide What Food is ‘Disgusting’” by Jiayang Fan and selections from The Omnivore’s Dilemma [“The Anxiety of Eating” & “The Ethics of Eating Animals”] by Michael Pollan to support your writing.
The final essay assignment will be available
from 12:01 a.m. on December 12 to 11:59 p.m. on December 14.
The essay is due before midnight on Saturday, December 14.
The essay is not timed; you have multiple days during which to write, revise, and submit the final exam essay.
Remember to:
- Develop a thesis that takes a clear stance or position in response to one of the questions.
- Organize your thoughts — an outline can help do this.
- Use MLA in-text citation to support your claim with quotes and paraphrases from BOTH of the final exam readings.
(You must use at least one cited idea from each reading). - Discuss how the citations and ideas are relevant to your thesis through close reading and personal connections/observations.
While you can also use your own observations and experiences to develop your claims,
the Fan and the Pollan readings must be the primary source for development.
