Expenses associated with the grant proposal will include training the staff. Funds will be needed to train primary care providers (PCPs), nurses, and medical assistants. The training will consist of education on how to conduct depression screenings, recognize symptoms, and schedule follow-ups for the patient. The behavioral health team and the front desk receptionist may also need additional training. Behavioral health specialists can help to provide education and training to the staff, but this will take their time away from patient care and could create missed revenue and more expenses for training. The screening tool will be the PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) on a dry-erase board that will then be put into the patient’s electronic chart. So, there will be costs to order enough dry-erase boards and markers. There can also be paper forms of the depression screening tool. The EHR integrates the depression screening tool into the patient chart once the staff enters it so that no additional costs will be necessary. There is also already a data management system that will track the screenings, outcomes, and referrals integrated into the EHR (Patil, 2019).
Educational resources will be given to the patient to help understand the importance of depression screening, how to interpret results, and the next steps after screening. These materials can be printed or developed in digital formats. Patient outreach to send text reminders for follow-up appointments has already occurred. Digital communication to increase patient engagement would add funds for advertising. Evaluating the practice project’s success will require a statistician, a specialist who can calculate the data. This will measure the patient outcomes and improvements in depression symptoms (Waxman & Massarweh, 2018).
