An accessible, transparent and secure voting system is paramount in making citizens feel that their voices and political interests are reflected freely and fairly. This is the essence of a democracy. The purpose of this paper is to break down the functioning of the electoral system and to highlight the electoral system’s strengths and weaknesses. Quebec’s election system is first-past-the-post, with voters in 125 electoral districts electing a candidate to represent them. The party that elects the most candidates in the 125 ridings will form the government.
The first part of the paper will discuss one of the strengths of the electoral system, namely the use of paper ballots versus the use of technological means and their impact on society. In the second section, I will pinpoint two major flaws such as disproportionate representation and wasted votes.
The use of paper ballots is one of Quebec’s greatest electoral strengths. Many modern democracies have adopted electronic voting methods to improve efficiency and speed, accessibility, and in order to restrict and eliminate any human error; nevertheless, Quebec continues to utilize paper ballots.
