Purpose of this assignment:
In the book which you just read, Leadership and theOne Minute Manager – Situational Leadership, the author introduces the concept of matching leadership or management styles with the development level (on each task) of the employee. You were introduced to the key tenants of Ken Blanchard’s The One Minute Manager (his famous original book) in both CMR 263 and CMR 363. But you don’t have to remember from back then, because the three key concepts are explained in this book as well: One Minute Goal Setting, One Minute Praisings. One Minute Re-Directs or Reprimands.
Now, as a sales manager, you will learn and practice the three steps to successful leadership: Goal Setting (individually with your people) , Diagnosing (their development or skill level on each task), and then finally Matching (the appropriate leadership style to the development level.
Ken says “It’s not just different strokes for different folks, its different strokes for the same folks, depending on the situation. For him, the word stroke means what you need to do to best lead your people. It is task-specific. Individual people will need you to use a different management style depending on how competent and confident they are to do any one particular thing you assign to them.

- Part 1: Read the LOMM book. Then summarize the book – this will take at least three pages, single-spaced – as follows. First, explain each of the three steps in the SL II process. Then explain each part of the SLII diagram model above. Explain in detail and also give your own examples of each development level. Do the same (again, give your own examples) for each potential leadership style. Finally, describe why you use a certain style (S1-4) for a certain development (D1-4). 25 points
- Part 2: Watch the video below, which is a set of movie clips specifically chosen for this exercise. For each movie clip, identify the leader and the follower. Give your assessment of the follower’s development level (remember, on that task). Then specifically describe the leadership style being used.
