For this essay assignment, you will write a 3–page research-based paper in current APA format which analyzes the definition of terrorism and how it is distinguished from the lawful use of violence by governments. Each essay must include appropriate citations from the course textbook and articles in the course text relevant to the definition of terrorism and the Bible. You may use additional outside sources as well but it is not required. Each essay will be submitted through a Turnitin link in Canvas.

• All sources used in the paper must be properly cited and referenced. This includes:
o In-text citations for facts, statistics, information, and examples presented using the author/date (author,date) APA format.
o A Reference List (Bibliography), in APA format will be included on a separate page, at the end of the paper.
• Note: The inclusion of Christian perspectives, in particular how Romans 13 applies, or opinions are part of your graded assignment. Make sure that these are integrated in a coherent manner that fits the overall tenor of your analysis.
• When writing the essay, be sure to integrate material (cited and referenced) from all of the readings assigned for that module. This demonstrates that you read, understood, and are able to apply the week’s materials. Moreover, it is a graded component for each paper.

 

Essay Paper: Definition of Terrorism and Comparison to Use of Violence by Governments Assignment

• Using Alex Schmid’s definition of the elements of terrorism and leveraging the module readings discuss what distinguishes terrorism from lawful acts of violence carried out by governments and how are these lawful forces identified and how do they carry out their missions. What are the implications of the biblical perspective of Romans 13 and God’s role for authority as we consider “terrorism” and acts of violence by governments in the pursuit of justice or security of their citizens.
o The paper will have a single paragraph opening that lays out the core of the definition of terrorism and how violent acts by terrorist actors and those of law enforcement or military forces of states differ and the need to examine those boundaries.
o The main body will identify Schmid’s elements of terror and can compare/contrast those with other definitions of terror in the text.
o Additional paragraphs in the main body will identify what distinguishes lawful acts by military or law enforcement elements to maintain civil order, security, and protect citizens.
o Additional sources on what distinguishes internationally recognized combat or law enforcement activity may be used.
o The paper will have a conclusion which summarizes the analysis and has your perspective on the definition of terrorism and key points on when the use of force by governments is seen as just and when it may be called into question.
