Kim as a Symbol of the British Empire: Colonialism, Identity, and Adventure in Kipling’s Kim

 Write a 4-5 page essay on one of the following topics. I am looking for an essay that has an argument. This can be tricky sometimes when you are writing a paper about literature, because you also have to engage in close analysis of the text. This means you want to pay attention to the language the author uses. You also have to attend to the metaphors, to images, to strategies that the author uses to tell the reader things about the major themes without just spelling them out up front. What this means, then, is that your thesis has to be subtle (and supple). You have to find a way to do justice to the complexities of the text, which is what makes papers interesting. At the same time, you have to be clear. Remember always to keep the stakes in view-that is why is an author/director doing something? What do they hope to express? What do they hope to gain? What might be the stakes of their presentation and argument in the world? Try starting with two or three passages/ scenes that contain the themes, images and figures/tropes that interest you.
