My 5 biggest time wasters are as follows
- Social Media
- Video games
- TV
- Spontaneous plans with friends
- Afternoon naps
I think the first 3 on this list are somewhat easy to get rid of. I don’t play video ganes often but if I’m home and need to do homework, sometimes I’ll play games instead of doing homework. I have also almost completely stopped watching TV and spending time on social media ever since I started school again, simply because they were never that important in my life.
Spontaneous plans with friends such as “lets go out after work” can be challenging. It’s not planned ahead of time and it’s also really hard to say no to them, even if I was planing on studying that evening. Sometimes I’ll say yes and then just wake up earlier the next day to make up for the lost studying time from the previous night.
Afternoon naps are great after work and the gym, but they really waste hours of my evening. I could get home at 6 and then sleep until 9 and not want to do school work. But I also know that if I don’t do it as soon as I wake up from a nap, I definitely won’t be doing it the next morning.
My “to-do” list is as follows
- Keep up with schoolwork week to week
- Go to the gym 4 times a week
- Ask out the girl I like
- Go out with my friends more
- Keep moving up in my career
- Find roommates and move out of my parents house
- Clean up my bathroom and bedroom later this week
- Feed the dogs everyday when I get home
- Water the plants every day before I leave
- Help my mom build the new furniture she bought
I honestly don’t know how to prioritize my list, because everything on it means a lot to me. The biggest advantage I have now is simply my age so I have time to figure it all out, as well as the energy to balance them
AND
My 5 biggest time wasters:
- My cell phone (random texts, socials, shopping etc.)
- Unnecessary meetings
- Environmental distractions when working from home(pets, minor chores)
- Environmental distractions when at the office (drop-in visitors, action around the office)
- Commuting
For the most part, my time wasters are within my control. However, they are constantly at the forefront of my mind because it’s hard for me to stay focused on one task for long periods, depending on what the task is. There are some things that are difficult to avoid because they just are naturally part of my environments such as drop-in visitors at the office, commuting to and from jobs, and being pulled into meetings that may not be valuable to my time. My priority though, is focused on managing those I can control and mitigating those time wasters as much as possible.
