**YOU MAY USE ‘WORD’ OR ‘POWERPOINT’ FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT**
Objectives:
–
To describe
specific theories discussed through the term: eg. Theories of Aesthetics,
Spatial Theory, Theories of Human Behaviour etc.
–
To define the
meanings and metaphorical representations of space and place
–
To illustrate
examples of Social Responsibility in Design
Description
This assignment will allow students to
answer and articulate in writing: how can Aesthetics and Social Responsibility
in Design co-exist? Using at least TWO theories discussed this term and giving
at least FOUR specific examples of architecture and interior design, describe
ways that visually engaging spaces can also inspire Social Justice in the built
environment.
Instructions
1. Review the variety
of critical theories discussed throughout the term and look ahead to Unit 9’s
focus on Social Responsibility in Design.
Unit 2
Theory: Theories of Human
Behavior and Design
Unit 3
Theory: Perception –
Vernacular Architecture for Social Purpose
Unit 4
Theory: Spatial Theory and
Design
Unit 6
Theory: Biophilic Design
Unit 7
Theory: The Psychology of
Aesthetics
Unit 8
Theory: Formal Aesthetic
Theory
Unit 9
Theory: Social Responsibility
of Design
2.
Drawing from the information that you have gathered, propose a thoughtful and
engaged argument that aligns Aesthetics and Social Responsibility. Using past
and current examples of designers and architects who promote this relationship,
your evidence is articulated through at least FOUR architectural and interior
design examples. Using these built environment examples as support, link at
least TWO different Interior Design Theories from the unit’s that support your
argument. Consider the following:
a. Context
of your FOUR chosen buildings/interiors: what challenges of site,
demographics, time period etc. could make the intent to relate Aesthetics and
Social Justice more important?
b. Focusing
your argument on one specific issue: eg Indigenous Design, Low-income
housing, remote locations, cities in crisis, locations in war, etc.
c. Define
your TWO chosen theories; start by clearly stating and explaining the two
theories you have selected from the unit’s. Provide definitions, background
information, and key concepts or principles that are central to each theory.
This section should give a thorough understanding of what each theory is about.
d. Exploring
how they are explored through examples; after defining the theories, move
on to illustrating how these theories are applied or examined in practice. Use
specific examples to show how the theories manifest in real-world situations or
in the context of a particular subject or case study. These examples should
help to elucidate the practical implications or the real-world relevance of the
theories
3. Use as much images
and illustration needed, but ensure proper labelling of each image with Figure reference.
3. All research must be
properly resourced with a reference page and APA citation and formatting rules
followed.
4. Include a footer at the bottom of each page (except
the title page) including the assignment name, page name and your name.
