In pediatric patients undergoing elective tonsillectomy, how does the use of dexmedetomidine for sedation compare to the use of midazolam in terms of reducing perioperative anxiety and postoperative pain during the perioperative period.

Section 2–Locate one classic piece of evidence (eg, early article, research, or other foundational information that is representative of the chosen anesthesia dilemma that might have influenced later studies.  The evidence located can be an article, website, or other source.

 You may use the classic article in Section 4 to review (if it reflects current practice and can help answer the dilemma).

• What type of article/information is it? (eg, simple review, package insert, editorial, RCT, other type of research study, website, or other type of information)
• Why do you believe this information represents foundational evidence or influences study/evolution of this topic?

Section 3–Complete a structured search for your dilemma to locate 3 best evidence research articles. Use one or more large database of your choice (best searching practice is to use more than one to compare findings), noting the process you went through locating best evidence.

•  Give a brief description of databases searched, keywords successful, date range used, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and the results obtained. (one paragraph)
• The date range is not the date when you sat down and conducted your search, it is the range in years for the articles you searched (eg, 2000-2015)
• An example of how to perform a structured search and an example of structured search write up is located above in this unit.

Section 4–Critically appraise 3 best-evidence articles located in the structured search related to the chosen anesthesia dilemma.  Include the following information: 1) type of research/study methodology, 2) study purpose, 3) sample description, 3) summarized results as well as statistical significance, 4) discuss internal and external validity each in a separate sentence related to your article (check out Portney’s explanation of internal/external validity),  5) Level of evidence using Portney’s adaptation.

Do not take a stance or make a decision in this section or as part of this paper. Just summarize study findings.

• Do not put the article title in the body of the paper, as it is not AMA format to do so.  All of your citations should be located in the references section of the paper, using AMA format.
• Create a new paragraph for each article reviewed.
• Use AMA format to refer to any parts of the citations within the body of the paper (eg, superscript).
• Include a separate conclusion paragraph to summarize findings without taking a stance.
