Final Research Paper | Sociolinguistic Bilingual Interview (20%)
In order to fully explore the local bilingualism among Spanish and English-speaking communities, students will conduct a sociolinguistic interview with a Spanish speaker living in the United States. The main objective of this interview is to understand the linguistic experience of this person and their attitudes towards the use of Spanish and English in the U.S.. At the end of the course, students must submit a three-part written paper: 1) a narrative summarizing field notes (which describe the process, difficulties, fears, questions, observations, challenges and successes of the experience); 2) the responses of your interviewee; and 3) a brief essay describing how the experience and linguistic position of this person is related to two or more theoretical concepts discussed in class. The final paper should be typed using Times New Roman, 12 inches, doubled space, following APA or MLA format. Additionally, the paper should be between 5-8 if you work alone and 8-10 if you work in pairs.
