To answer this question, you will
probably want to start by explaining what conduct is. The readings
provide are a central source for this. This Unit argues that the
study of conduct offers a way of understanding the interdependent
relationship between individuals and social worlds. While Goffman
and other theorist of conduct tended to stress the way, social
situations shape individual conduct, subsequent theorists, notably Bruno
Latour and Michel Callon, have drawn attention to the role of
material equipment and architecture in shaping conduct.
During the Covid pandemic, for example,
the rules governing movement in public space changed dramatically overnight and
this was often achieved through repurposed materials β tape, traffic cones,
chalk etc. In most everyday situations the role of
materials is much less obvious. The question invites you to explore
examples of how material equipment acts to shape conduct in everyday
settings. A range of examples are featured throughout the unit, and
you may draw on these and/or your own observations. You might also
consider the role of agency in this context. Who or what is βactingβ to
shape conduct?
